Synthetic Rope has become famous as an alternative to steel, is easy to handle, and is convenient. Each winch rope has its features. They have different pros and cons. Synthetic Rope is considered the best one for winch. Often people ask how much it can last. It intensely depends on the owner and the method of usage. There are some precautions that one needs to follow are discussed below:

Precautions

Warnings and safety contain different kinds of messages to make a person safe. Cautions and warnings suggest avoiding hazards and express probable consequences that may happen.

  1. One should know the WLL (Working Load Limit) of the rope, you use.
  2. The limit of lbs should never exceed more than 10,000 lbs.
  3. You need to determine the suitability of the rope for a specific application.
  4. You need to replace it if it is damaged, worn, overloaded, improperly maintained, or abused.
  5. Do not use a rope on a rough surface without abrasion.
  6. You need to stand to WARN hawse fairlead.
  7. A WARN hawse fairlead should be changed every year.
  8. Do not use WARN hawse fairlead if it is damaged.

When it comes to general safety, one must be aware of a few things. Before using a winch, get to know all the details of the warn winch. It may take a long time to read instructions or operation guides. You need to understand those instructions and the operations. Never exceed the capacity of a winch or the rope than the amount mentioned.

You must use a double line through the snatch block to remove the winch load. You have to use pure leather or hard gloves while handling winch rope. One should avoid winch or winch rope for towing. Shock can break and damage it. These are some general safety rules that one must follow to be safe.

For installing winch rope, people should follow the safety rules mentioned below:

  1. During installation keep a clear winch rope on your hand, hook loop, and hook and fairlead opening while installing, operating, and spooning in and out.
  2. Held the fairlead warning steadily.
  3. Before holding, pre-stretch the rope and re-spool it. A rope should be bound freely because if it is held tightly it can cause damage to the rope.
  4. A rope should be wrapped at least ten times around the drum. It can loose from the drum if it is not wrapped properly thus the attachment between the rope and drum should be designed to hold the load.

One should know what the correct winch is to have such as the size, length, and amps. Always inspect the winch book and its details before opening it. If you are handed a damaged or kinked winch, it must be changed immediately. Damage devices must be changed before the operation, and try to protect every part during application.

One should use a supplied hook strap during application, installation, and whenever spooling a winch rope in or out. Never touch it or winch when it is under load and load a clear of the winch.

A few precautions are mentioned below:

  1. Don’t hurry during ringing. It may take a little more time to ring appropriately.
  2. Always hold the winch rope at the bottom of the drum.
  3. Never held the rope at the top of the drum.
  4. Spool the winch rope in the direction mentioned on the drum or in the documentation. It is needed for the automatic brake to work properly.
  5. Never hook back once it is held on the rope.
  6. Hold the rope tightly or properly so that it cannot slip from the hand.
  7. If heat build-up from power continuously, repair it because it can cause damage to the rope.
  8. Never use fuels, harsh detergents, or oils to winch rope.
Before beginning to install rope, if you find any problems in the winch then I recommend you to first fix that issue and then move forward. I have written a troubleshooting guide for warn winches, you can use it for future references

How to install synthetic rope on Warn winch?

Before installing a winch rope you need to have some specific things. Those are:

  1. WARN a synthetic winch rope
  2. WARN Hawse Fairlead (required for replacement)
  3. Hard leather gloves
  4. Zip tie
  5. Anchor puck 5/16

For the installation of a synthetic rope, you should have a WARN Hawse Fairlead mounted to the winch. It is highly recommended for optimal performance. Follow the process mentioned below to install synthetic rope:

Step 1: Disconnect the old cable from the battery that has been used for the power winch.

Step 2: Cover the rope with an abrasion sleeve from the end opposite of the hook and get back the sleeve to the hook at the end part of the rope.

Step 3: Insert the Synthetic hook around the winch drum from the bottom through the fairlead.

Step 4: Before installation, check whether the loop is made of the supplied chain.

Step 5: Use a tied cable to pull the synthetic rope through the anchor pocket.

Step 6: After pulling has been completed, cut the zip carefully so that the rope does not get damaged.

Step 7: Always install a 5/10” rope to the puck from the center of the rope eyelet.

Step 8: Keep the puck in place until the rope is entirely pulled away from the drum. Once the puck is seated on all sides of the rope, pull the rope until the puck lodges at its position with the rope.

Step 9: Make sure the rope is placed tightly. The loop should not protrude from the surface.

Step 10: Reconnect the cable to the battery.

Step 11: Turn the clutch lever to the “engaged” position on the winch.

Step 12: Wrap the rope at least ten times on the drum during light tension application over the rope.

During the rope spooling, a few methods and cautions must be followed:

  1. It is essential to spool the remaining part on the drum. Make sure the surface is plain, clear and large enough to run out the entire length of the winch rope.
  2. Make sure the rope has wrapped for ten rounds of the drum.
  3. Attach the hook at the position to a suitable anchor point and connect the remote control to the winch.
  4. If the winch rope is laid on the ground, wait until it is off the ground.
  5. Once the rope is placed, check whether it is winding properly on the winch.

Note: This process remains same for all the warn winches, even for small sizes winches too like Warn drill winch. I also did a review of warn winches, do check it out too.

Summary

Whenever you install the winch rope, check it from inside and outside, the hook, and the slings before operation. If any components are damaged, replace them immediately. Read the instructions regarding installation properly. Replace the winch rope every 12 months with a synthetic winch. The Rope must be spooled on the drum as per the indication on the winch. Always take some time to understand the entire process of the winch operation.
