Winches are devices that come very handy when pulling or lifting any heavy load. If you like off-roading in the countryside, you must be familiar with a winch as it is a critical piece of equipment. You can find a variety of winch in the market, like an electrical winch, hydraulic winch, hand winch, capstan winch, etc. Among these winches, the capstan winch is the most versatile.

What is a Capstan Winch?

Capstan winches were traditionally used on ships and rail yards as a heavy-duty device for positioning and pulling heavy freight cars, and they were not very compact back then. Though, the modern capstan winches are very compact and lightweight. Like any other winch, a Capstan winch[1] helps to pull and lift heavy loads, but unlike a traditional winch, a capstan winch does not have a cable or rope on a spool.

Since a capstan winch doesn’t have a rope or cable, it doesn’t have any wire length limitations. This winch is very economical and versatile, featuring horizontal and vertical configurations. The rope length will not affect the operation even if you add a pulley. Generally, capstan winches are used for heavy-duty work like mining, marine, and sailing. It also comes in different varieties.

Types of Capstan Winch

You can find the following types of capstan winches in the market.

Hydraulic Capstan Winch

Hydraulic capstan winches are durable, heavy-duty winches which operate by drawing power from the hydraulic system of the vehicle. Unlike an electrical winch, a hydraulic winch doesn’t need a battery, making it more durable. This type of winch works more efficiently underwater and is therefore preferred for carrying out heavy marine activities.

However, these are very difficult to install and operate as they consist of several pushbuttons, control panel screen joysticks, etc. The installation process is time-consuming and can also be expensive as certain parts are required to be bought separately.

Electrical Capstan Winch

As the name suggests, an electrical capstan winch operates by drawing electrical power from the vehicle’s battery. It features an electronic motor which helps to spool the cable by rotating the horizontal drum. This feature does not require you to pull the cable manually. The electrical capstan winches are generally used for commercial purposes like towing vehicles, pulling heavy loads, etc.

Though the electrical type doesn’t have a long service life, it gets heated up very quickly and also drains the battery of the vehicle. Unlike a hydraulic capstan winch, an electric capstan winch is easy to install and doesn’t need extra parts.

Manual Capstan Winch

A manual capstan winch is the simplest form of capstan winch, which operates without drawing any external power. As the name suggests, this type of capstan winch can be operated manually by applying physical force.

Since it requires physical labor to operate, manual capstan winches are less powerful. Therefore they are not suitable for lifting heavy loads and heavy-duty work. However, they are lightweight compared to hydraulic and electrical capstan winch, making them easy to transport.

How does a Capstan Winch Work?

A capstan winch is a versatile winch whose components work flawlessly to accomplish a winching operation in harsh and precarious environments. A typical capstan winch will feature a drum which rotates vertically. This vertical drum is also known as a winch drum.

The vertical drum assists in pulling heavy loads horizontally and also allow the rope out at an angle. The design of the drum allows it to roll only in one direction, as a result of which you get better control of the pulling movement. The entire machinery is based on a sturdy framework.

Operating a capstan winch is quite easy once you get the hang of it. To operate the winch, you would first need to cable, which would be wound around an extended piece of hardware, by using a lever or manually by using your hands. You also use an electronic version which will save you time and energy.

To lift or pull the load, adjust the cable line according to the item you will be working with. Once the winch line is adjusted l, you can start pulling the rope. The pulling movement will generate friction between the cable and the vertical winch drum. As a result of which, the weight of the hauling item gets shifted onto the rope, which allows for smooth and hassle-free pulling and lifting of the loads.

Summary

Therefore, a capstan winch is a flexible device which assists in hauling and dragging heavy objects or sailing ships. This vertical-axled rotating device helps in lifting hefty loads smoothly and with ease. To operate a capstan winch, it is important to have knowledge about its mechanism and other features. If you are new at operating a capstan winch and are not sure about how it is done, you can refer to the above article, which talks about the operation and types of a capstan winch.
